A Picnic with Zainab

This is Zainab. She is a refugee from Afghanistan, someone who has rebuilt her life with quiet strength and an open heart. We met during a small community picnic at the park, a gathering that brought together families, laughter, and food from many homes. Zainab arrived with a plate of homemade pita wraps wrapped carefully in foil. The smell of warm bread and herbs carried in the breeze as she passed them around, smiling shyly each time someone complimented her cooking.

Her children filled the open field with life. They ran in circles, tripped over the grass, and burst into laughter so contagious that even strangers couldn’t help but smile. They are playful and mischievous, always turning the simplest moments into a game. One tugged on her sleeve, another darted behind the trees, and she balanced it all with calm patience. Sometimes she called after them, sometimes she just watched, her eyes soft but knowing.

There was a quiet beauty in the scene. A mother in a deep blue shawl embroidered with silver, surrounded by the chaos of children and the peace of an ordinary afternoon. It was easy to forget, in that small park, how far she had come and what she had left behind. The picnic felt like a pause in time, a space where stories and laughter replaced the weight of the past.

In these moments, community becomes something simple and real. It is found in shared food, in the sound of children playing, and in the quiet strength of people like Zainab, who find ways to begin again.
